Goldie V. Murphy, 96

Goldie V. Murphy, 96, of Austin, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester.

She was born Sept. 18, 1905, in Castalia, Iowa, to Orley and Emma (Olson) Moore. She was baptized in Chester, Iowa.

She became a Catholic convert and, on Sept. 24, 1922, married Thomas J. Murphy in Mason City, Iowa.

The couple farmed eight miles from Lime Springs. In 1937, they moved to Austin and both began work for the George A. Hormel Company. Hired in 1944, Goldie worked in the Vienna Fresh Sausage and Dry Sausage Departments. In 1969, she retired with 27 and one half years of employment.

Survivors include son, Joseph and Audrey Murphy, Austin; daughters, Madeline and William Ashton Jr., Austin; Rosemary and Max Crowley, Austin; son-in-law, Robert Erickson, Austin; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; sister, Violet Denelsbeck, Minnetonka.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas J. Murphy; daughter, Mary Jane Erickson; sisters, Flossie, Sylvia and Pearl; brothers, Orville and Louis.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2002, with a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. rosary and Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Paul Nelson and Father Virgil Duellman officiating. The cantor will be Colleen Ashton-McKinney. The pianist will be Shirley Cahill. Casket bearers will be James Ashton, Steven Ashton, William Ashton, Robert Ashton, James Crowley and Thomas Crowley.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Rochester.
