Fire in bedroom extinguished

The Austin Fire Department was called to the Claudia Mendez residence early Monday evening.

According to an Austin Police Department report, Mendez and a son were in the home, watching television, when they smelled smoke and called the fire department at 6:10 p.m. Monday.

703 1st Ave. SW, they were able to extinguish the fire which appeared to have originated in an upstairs bedroom, according to the firefighters' report.

Portable radios stolen

The Austin Fire Department was the victim of a theft of equipment from a fire truck.

According to a report to the Austin Police Department, two hand-held radios were taken from the truck sometime between 8 a.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.

The radios are valued at $2,000, according to the fire department's report of the theft.
