Adams is ready for Dairy Days
Published 12:00 am Thursday, June 6, 2002
The town of Adams has its big celebration of Dairy Days this weekend. New this year to all the activities is the Dairy Days Poker Fun Walk. This takes place on Saturday. Registration for the walk starts at 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart School. There will be five stops where walkers will pick up a playing card. The cards will be posted and the person with the best poker hand will win part of the proceeds. The entry fee for the Poker Walk is $3. Country Aces 4-H is sponsoring the Walk with the profit made going for their Community Pride project.
The St. Veronica Unit of Sacred Heart Parish will be supporting a Train Show at Sacred Heart Auditorium. An electric train and a Lego-set up will be on display from the LaCrosse Three Rivers Train Club. Admission for the Train Show is $1 for children under 12; children over 12 and adult $2; there is a family admission of $5. The Train Show is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday June 8-9.
The Grand Parade for Dairy Days is at 1 p.m. Sunday. The grand marshals for the parade this year are Larry and Joanne Croker. Larry is retiring from Southland as the principal and Joann is retiring from teaching and being the principal at Sacred Heart School in Adams.
The Mower County Dairy Princess, Cristy Sathre, will be riding in the parade along with the other Mower County dairy royalty. Cristy is a 2002 graduate of Southland and will be attending Riverland Community College this fall.
She is helping her parents Lynn and Jane Sathre on the farm this summer along with working at East Side convenience store.
Cristy represents Mower County well being the 2002 Dairy Princess. Her family farms 600 acres and milks 70 Holstein cows everyday. She helps with the milking, takes care of the calves and does farm work such as baling hay.
"I usually rack the hay before it dries," said Cristy. Needless to say, she is adept at driving a tractor.
She has been at the grocery stores and schools promoting dairy products and expounding about their benefits. It is fitting that a dairy princess would have a cow as a pet. Her pet cow, Hannah, has helped her win ribbons at the Mower County Fair the last four years.
"I will be selling milk shakes at a concession stand for dairy days. I hope everyone stops to purchase one," said Cristy.
