A new beginning

Construction on the new ice arena has finally begun.
Monday, the official ground-breaking ceremony was held, signaling the start of a project many have struggled to initiate for years.
"It's so exciting, we're actually digging dirt," Mayor Bonnie Rietz beamed as she jammed a shovel into the ground. "This is one of those projects you really look forward to in local government. It involves private, county and state monies. We're really very blessed, it's a super project."
Dean Roberts, president of Austin Youth Hockey, also was enthused about the start of the project. "It's a benefit for the whole entire community, not just the hockey teams," he said, explaining the new ice arena will provide more ice time for anyone who wants to ice skate.
Of course, the hockey teams will benefit from the second sheet of ice. "It will make Austin much more competitive with other leagues that have ice arenas which can house a lot more kids and can give them more ice time … it's important for the kids to be competitive because when they can be competitive, that helps their self-esteem," Roberts said.
Most hockey teams can only practice an average of one and a half times a week because of the limited ice space, he added.
"It's a positive thing not only for Austin, but for the surrounding areas because everyone will have access to it," he said.
