Sometimes your best simply isn't good enough.

Even though the Austin girls' golf team set its school record with a team score of 346 Friday, Packer coach Mark Anderson said his varsity golfers were discussing ways to trim more strokes from their totals after breaking the previous mark by one shot.

"Even after shooting a school record they talk about how they need to improve in this area and that area," Anderson said. "They do a great job of competing with each other, yet at the same time supporting each other to play better.

"I am so proud of these girls, they just keep working harder and harder all the time."

The Packers' Claire Johnson and Owatonna's Kerry Shea tied with identical rounds of 43-40--83 for meet medalist honors as Austin (8-0, 7-0) scored two Big Nine Conference dual wins over Owatonna and Rochester John Marshall Friday at the Austin Country Club.

Three of Austin's four scoring rounds were in the 80s, and Andrea Petersen's 90 topped off the team total. Aside from Shea, none of Austin's opposing individuals scored better than a 93 on by far one of the mildest days for play this season.

Johnson's 83 edged teammate Brittany Bertilson by one stroke, with Carissa Gabrielson adding an 89.

"Claire had an outstanding day," Coach Anderson said. "She hit her driver and irons great and putted outstanding.

"Brittany hit her driver wonderfully today, but she struggled with her putter, which is usually the strongest part of her game."

Johnson needed just 29 putts over 18 holes, helping the Packers' team average to 34 putts per round during the day.
