The third annual

DCD Special Education Prom held at St. Augustine's on Thursday had 77 attendees and 27 of those were Special Education students.

The morning started out at the Austin High School with hairstylists from Golden Tress coming to primp the girls. At 10:30 a.m. Land-mark Limousine pulled up to the high school to give students a ride. The dance started at 11 a.m. with music provided by Tom Bridges from Sound Tronics. The students were jiving to the music and forming a dance circle where one student would go in the middle and strut their stuff while others cheered the dancer on. There was a lot of whooping and hollering from the spectators.

The theme of the Special Prom was Stars and Stripes Forever. Custodians and Educational Assistants from the high school put the decorations up. The center pieces for the tables were made by the special education students under the direction of instructor, Connie Bos.

Some of the students needed help in getting ready for the prom. High school students helped with the dressing. The Special Education Department helped a few students that had trouble purchasing their clothes with funding. Several of the male students rented tuxedos and few suits were purchased. Some nice suits were donated to help with outfitting all the prom goers.

Mary Lynn Knoebel, a long term sub at the high school was at her first Special Prom. She said the girls practiced putting on nylons before the prom to prepare them for this day. Over 100 volunteers helped with putting on the Special Prom.
