HAYFIELD — The Hayfield softball team missed its seniors in a season opening 11-1 loss to La Crescent at Hayfield Tuesday.
The Vikings (0-1 overall, 0-1 HVL) played without senior catcher Katelyn Kramer and senior third baseman Renee Stier, who were gone on a class trip.
“We missed them a lot,” Hayfield head coach Jana Wagner said. “Missing them in those two positions hurt, but we did okay.”
The Lancers (1-0 overall, 1-0 HVL) did some early damage in the second inning, when they used a two-out rally to turn a 3-0 game into a 5-0 game.
Kayla Sandvik knocked a two-out single up the middle to score two and cap the rally.
Hayfield scored on a two-out RBI single by Emily Blanchard in the fourth inning to make it 6-1, but that was all the offense the Vikings could muster as they finished with just three hits off of La Crescent eighth grader Dayelle Duerwachter.
“Every game’s a learning experience,” Wagner said. “We’re looking at the regular season as the preseason we’ll aim for the postseason.”
