Keep trying to reach an agreement

A majority of teachers in the Austin school district threw their school board a curve when they rejected a proposed contract that had been agreed upon by the representatives of the teachers' association and the district.

There's no question the teachers have a tough job to do and they have a large responsibility educating tomorrow's leaders.

However, the teachers have entrusted the Austin Education Association to represent them. So it's disappointing teachers didn't go along with the association that's supposed to be their voice.

It's clear neither side will be 100 percent satisfied with whatever contract is drawn up. But that's what compromise is all about.

We encourage the teachers and their association to figure out a way to keep working with the school district to find a solution that's best for all involved.
