Robert D. Nelson, 70

Robert D. Nelson, 70, of Lyle, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born April 20, 1931, in Austin, to Raymond D. and Genevieve (Hanson) Nelson.

After graduating from Lyle High School, he attended Austin Community College.

On Oct. 14, 1950, he married Helen Heard in Lyle.

Bob was employed by the Hormel Corporation, working there for many years. A lifelong Lyle resident, he also operated a television repair business in Lyle.

He was a member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church in Lyle and the Lyle Legion Club.

He enjoyed sports, particularly playing golf.

Survivors include wife, Helen; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Paul Wilson, Sr., Mantorville; son and daughters-in-law, Joel and Penny Nelson, Plainview; Sandy Anderson, St. Cloud; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Iris and Clare Vincent, Albert Lea.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Jeffrey.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the funeral home and at the church one hour before the service on Thursday.

Service: 1 p.m., today, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle with Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery, Austin.

Ruth E. Lerud, 80

Ruth E. Lerud, 80, of Austin, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center, Albert Lea.

She was born March 12, 1922, to Hugo A. and Pearl H. (Hendricks) Berndt in Mayer.

On April 25, 1942, she married Herbert Lerud in Minneapolis.

Ruth lived in the London area for over 50 years before moving to Lyle in November 1999.

She enjoyed fishing, gardening, crafts, house plants and volunteer work for SEMCAC in the Lyle area.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Charles Shotliff, Austin; Patricia Davis and Robert Oberg, Custer, S.D.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifford and Della Berndt, Elk Run Heights, Iowa; Donald and Maxine Berndt, Coon Rapids; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Lionel Stowe, New Brighton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister.

Visitation: One hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m. memorial service, Friday, April 5, 2002, at the funeral home with the Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating.
