AHS, Pacelli to share swimming and diving

It’s official: Austin Public Schools boy’s swimming and diving team will grow.

That’s due to the new co-op agreement between Austin and Pacelli Catholic Schools for the next two years, where Pacelli students will swim for Austin’s Class A team.

“It’s a good opportunity for them,” said Lisa Quednow-Bickler, Austin’s Activities Director.

The two schools have a similar agreement for other teams, including AHS’s boys tennis, girls swimming and diving, wrestling, boys and girls hockey and boys and girls soccer teams.

Austin Public School board members also did a first reading of revised harassment and violence, and instructional curriculum policies. District officials say only slight changes have been made to each policy. One key addition to the harassment and violence policy is that people cannot be discriminated against due to genetic information, such as an illness.

Board members also approved:

• A co-op agreement between Austin, Southland and Grand Meadow schools to have Austin report Southland’s and Grand Meadow’s “targeted services” numbers to the Minnesota Department of Education.

• The district’s “truth in taxation” hearing will be 6 p.m. Dec. 12 after the board meeting. The board will schedule its meeting for 5 p.m. to avoid conflict with Austin High School’s annual holiday concert.

Board changes meeting time

The board will have its next public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8 at City Council chambers.

Board members moved the meeting back to 6:30 p.m. after meeting at 5 p.m. for the past several months. The board switched to the 5 p.m. time this past spring, yet the 5 p.m. time recently presented a scheduling conflict with board chairman Aaron Keenan.

City makes donation

Austin Public Schools got a little local government support Monday.

The Austin Public School board accepted a $1,000 donation from the city of Austin for Taste of Nation expenses.
