Pandas help make learning Bible easy, fun

More than 200 kids and 85 volunteers at Queen of Angels next week won’t quite be pandemonium, but it will be PandaMania.
From 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 1 through Aug. 5, Austin Catholic parishes will hold their vacation bible school, which takes 3- to 11-year-olds on a biblical journey as Queen of Angels will be transformed into a rain forest with some volunteers dressed as animals.
Every year, Keri Flahive, youth director for Austin Catholic parishes, uses a different vacation bible school format provided by the company Group. Group’s programs take movies, costumes and stations and set up a virtual interpretation of the bible for kids. Each day, kids will learn a main topic, bible story and memorize a bible verse. They’ll learn through movies, skits, games and even during snack time, Flahive said.
However, teenagers benefit from the event as well, as they dress up as pandas and other animals to intrigue the kids.
“It’s active learning,” Flahive said, who has been coordinating religious youth activities for 11 years. “They constantly are moving from station to station.”
Flahive said the other nice thing about this bible school is its mixture of Hispanic and white children, along with kids from other denominations in Austin.
“It’s just the community,” Flahive said about the benefit of bringing others together. “They build when they are here.”
Flahive picks a different format each year from Group to keep things fresh. Last year she chose the theme High Seas Adventure. By bringing in many younger volunteers, Flahive has seen younger and older kids learn how to benefit from each other.
“It’s fun to see the teenagers interacting with these little kids,” she said, and added college students have even returned to Austin to help in the event.
PandaMania aims to ease learning for the kids, so they can show their parents what they’ve learned at the end of each lesson as well. Friday, at the event’s end, there will be a giant picnic for all family members.
