EDITORIAL: Recession has its bright spots

The recent statistic showing Mower County’s unemployment rate rising for the second straight month isn’t great news for the region, as there are still too many local people out of work.
There are some positives to go with this negative, however.
While Mower County’s rate increased from December’s 5.5 percent to 6.3 percent in January, the number is still below the 7.3 state unemployment rate and the 9.7 percent rate nationally.
In addition, Austin’s taxable retails sales increased by 12 percent in Austin in 2009 — an increase of $30 million, according to the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce.
Does this mean Austin is unaffected by the economy?
Certainly not, as there are businesses still struggling, residents still not being able to find a job.
What it does mean is that there are bright spots in this recession for Mower County, and our hope is that in time and with a continued emphasis on buying local, our residents and business owners will rebound from the economy and come out stronger as a result.
