On Monday, in a special work session, members of the Austin school board unanimously approved the bids submitted by Ulland Brothers and Kiefer Specialty Flooring, Inc. for work to be done to bring the Wescott track to fighting form.

Ulland Brothers will be responsible for field work and concrete strip materials and labor, at a total bid of $783,089. Kiefer Specialty Flooring, Inc. will be installing a professional quality Mondo surface on the track, at a cost of $423,420.

The total of these bid amounts is $226,509 above the original budget total of $980,000. This is due to new underground mechanical to provide electrical for lighting, scoreboards and the press box. This does not, however, create a financial hardship.

"With the pledges received to date, the architectural fees calculated and the interest expense, we are right on target," Director of Business Services Lori Volz said on Monday.

Bruce Huffer, director of buildings and grounds, said he has been talking to city of Austin Director of Public Works Jon Erichson about the possibility of the city aiding in the track removal. If that becomes a possibility, Ken Johnson, vice president and general manager of Ulland Brothers said he will have "no problem working (an adjustment to the bid) out, as long as it does not mess with the timeframe," he said.

Demolition on the current track is expected on June 11 and construction on the new track will commence as soon as decent weather comes to Austin.
