Chuck Gysi, managing editor of the Austin Daily Herald, has received second place for a column he wrote last year in a contest sponsored by the Minnesota Newspaper Association.

Gysi’s column, which appeared in February 2000, was recognized for explanation of newspaper operations or newspaper ethics. His column detailed how the Austin Daily Herald failed to cover a teen-ager’s death in an out-of-town traffic accident in 1999.

The award was presented Saturday at the annual awards ceremony for the Minnesota Newspaper Association in Bloomington. The annual contest was judged by the New England Press Association.

In its comments on Gysi’s column, the judges said: "Honest, straight-forward approach to explaining the complex job journalists must do. It takes a big editor to admit when the paper is wrong. If more did it as well as this, media credibility would skyrocket."

First place in the category was awarded to the St. Cloud Times.
