ST. CLOUD – Senior David Lorenzen scored two goals to lead the Austin Packers over St. Cloud Apollo, 5-3, in the second round of the Granite City Varsity Hockey Classic.
Austin moves on for the championship round against Bemidji at 6:15 tonight.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a goal at 4:44 by Matt Hartman, who was assisted by Dusty Richter and Mike Howe.
The Packers responded with three goals of their own in the first period: at 9:10, by Jamie Knudson (assisted by Brad Wiechmann and Andy Klapperick); at 9:59, by Brent Cummings (assisted by Josh Hanson) and at 16:57 by Lorenzen, who was unassisted.
Apollo came back in the second period with an unassisted goal by Mike Howe at 10:33. Lorenzen slapped another unassisted goal for the Packers at 15:36. The Eagles finished their scoring at 19:08 with a goal by James Henkemeyer, assisted by Matt Hartman.
At 16:41 of the third period, Josh Hanson scored the Packers’ last goal with an assist by Brandon Schaefer.
Austin had 25 shots on goal and six penalties, while Apollo had 34 shots on goal and seven penalties.
Mark Jacobson handled the goalie duties for the Packers, logging 31 saves.

In the consolation semifinals of the tournament, Sauk Rapids-Rice beat Hopkins 9-8.
