Austin High School DECA students and Neveln Elementary School pupils should be applauded for their efforts to bring merrier holidays to servicemen and women by sending gift packages.
While families gather to celebrate the holidays, it can be a lonely time for those serving overseas.
With the same enthusiasm the students greeted the Distributive Education Clubs of America projects, three juniors initiated the effort to bring a little taste of home to those in Saudi Arabia.
It may seem like nothing much. It’s some of the things we take for granted – cookies, candy, coffee and other American staples – that can remind military personnel of home.
But the kindness of Austin youngsters shouldn’t end with a package around the holidays.
Mower County Red Cross Chapter Director Mary Goetz pointed out that service people always look forward to letters, cards and other demonstrations of support throughout the year.
Let’s keep those who serve far away close to our thoughts throughout the year.
