It’s not so easy for a minor to purchase liquor in Mower County.
A recent check of 19 businesses throughout the county resulted in a perfect score – not one business failed the test. That’s a good thing.
Taverns, restaurants and liquor stores were checked in rural Austin, Grand Meadow, Mapleview, Brownsdale, Rose Creek, Adams, Taopi, LeRoy, Racine, Dexter, Elkton, Waltham and Lyle. No Austin businesses were checked because of staffing issues at the Austin Police Department.
While compliance checks conducted in 1998 and 1999 resulted in a few businesses being cited, this year’s check by law enforcement shows that businesses selling liquor in Mower County follow the law.
The businesses that passed the test this year received gold-plated plaques inscribed with the message "We Value Youth." These signs only reinforce the law that these businesses uphold.
If you see the plaque at a business you patronize, you might want to mention to the owners or managers an appreciation for keeping liquor out of the hands of youths.
