October is Fire Prevention Month and this week is Fire Prevention Week.
Members of the Mike and Lisa Conway family and friends participated in an Austin Fire Department Fire Prevention Week public service announcement’s videotaping.
The campaign is designed to increase public awareness of fire safety issues, according to Mike Conway, one of the department’s part-time paid firefighters.
The campaign consists of a series of commercials dealing with topics such as having an escape plan to exit a house in case of fire; what to do if one catches on fire; the Fire Department’s Smokebusters program and other fire safety issues.
The Smokebusters program offers a free smoke alarm installed by firefighters throughout Mower County. A year ago, the Fire Department worked with the Mower County chapter of the American Red Cross and township officials to place a smoke detector in every home in the county.
According to firefighter Conway, the Austin Fire Department reminds all families to have a working smoke alarm on every level of their home and to check the alarms monthly to ensure their effectiveness.
