Austin got back into Big Nine action after plying there wares against the top teams in the state (Rochester Mayo, Rochester Lourdes, Edina, etc.) at the Pat Lamb Invitational in Northfield this past weekend. The Packers had a much easier time of it against the Owatonna Huskies in tennis on Tuesday where they shut out the Huskies 7-0.
"Saturday we saw what we could do against the best, especially Edina," Austin coach Levon Larson said. "Laurie Alonso and Amy Kelly lost in the first rounds but then went on to win consolation titles."
On Tuesday, Alonso, Kelly and No. 3 singles Emily Bue were dominant.
"Laurie dropped the first two games but then went on to win 6-2, 6-1," Larson said. "Emily and Amy were just dominant in their matches."
At No. 4 singles Katie Erickson won 6-3, 7-6 (3).
"It was a fantastic match that last two hours," Larson said. "Katie played a strong tiebreak with her teammates cheering her on."
All three doubles teams also won in straight sets.
"Betsy Hingeveld and Claire Johnson played a very good match at No. 3," Larson said. "Our doubles were very strong on a great day."
On Thursday, Austin (9-0, 4-0) hosts Mankato East at Wescott Field.
