Donna Louise Laite, 31, was arrested and charged with felony theft for stealing $1,400 from her till at the Kmart Superstore between Aug. 29 and Sept. 5. According to the police report, when she was arrested, Laite had $350 on her person and admitted that she had taken cash on prior occasions.

The thefts were investigated internally by the Kmart security before arrests were made by the Austin Police Department.

Burglary in rural Lyle

Burglars cut the phone lines and took their time robbing the Eldon Winkle residence in rural Lyle over the holiday weekend. They stole radio and TV equipment, a VCR, cordless phone, three shotguns and two handguns, 25 southern gospel CDs among others, a Nintendo game and other items valued at more than $4,000.

Sheriff Barry Simonson said law enforcement got several fingerprints from the scene, which he said could be useful in the investigation. Entry likely was gained through an unlocked door to the residence.
