Reekay Ross, 808 Eighth Ave. SW, arrived home Tuesday to discover he residence burglarized.

According to an Austin Police Department report, the victim reported a computer, stereo, television and telephone among the missing items. No dollar estimate of the loss was given.

The burglary occurred sometime between 8 p.m. Monday and 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to the report.

Six people injured

A three-vehicle accident sent six people to Austin Medical Center – Mayo Health System hospital Tuesday afternoon.

According to an Austin Police Department report, a vehicle driven by Jessie Jo Schering, 23 of 804 Second Ave. SW, pulled from 25th Street into West Oakland Avenue traffic and collided with an oncoming vehicle. A third vehicle waiting in traffic to turn onto 25th Street was also struck.

Schering and three passengers, Angelica Schering, 3, and Alexander Schering, 1, plus Dustin Ransom, 23, were among those taken by ambulance to the Austin hospital’s emergency room.

Also taken to the hospital were the drivers of the two other vehicles involved in the mishap: Thomas Hiebert, 45 of 180 18th St. SW, and Beth Dolan, 33 of 703 Eighth Ave. SE.

Because of the number of victims requiring medical attention, Gold Cross Ambulance Service crews required the use of a Naeve Hospital Ambulance Service crew from Albert Lea to transport the victims.

Austin police officers spent 70 minutes at the scene atop the hill overlooking Turtle Creek in west Austin.

Long-time officer retires

Today is Austin Police Lt. Glenn Thaisen’s last day on the job.

Thaisen is retiring after a 31 year career in law enforcement.

He is a former candidate for Mower County Sheriff and at the time of his retirement the senior Austin Police Department officer in terms of service.

A month ago, Capt. Brian McAlister retired after a 30-year career in law enforcement.

Lt. Curt Rude has been appointed to fill the vacancy created by McAlister’s retirement.

There are four vacancies in the department that need to be filled to bring the number of officer up to the current staffing level.

Thaisen’s vacancy will be posted and candidates sought for the lieutenant’s position.
