A 61-year-old Brownsdale man was arrested and jailed Saturday morning in Austin.
William Christy Schottler, 61 of 101 Market St., Brownsdale, has a lengthy criminal history of many public disturbances, police said. He was observed driving a golf cart that had no license plates and was not registered along Fourth Street NW at 10:20 a.m. Saturday.
When an Austin police officer pursued him, Schottler refused to stop and drove the EZ Go-model golf cart to the Twin Towers high-rise apartment complex.
He resisted the patrolman’s commands and was sprayed with Mace to the ground, where he continued to resist, requiring a second officer’s assistance in handcuffing him before he was transported to the Mower County Jail. While being moved from the patrol car to the Austin-Mower County Law Enforcement Center for booking, Schottler allegedly struck one of the officers escorting him.
The golf cart belonged to Herman Schmidt, who lives at the Twin Towers apartments, who told officers he had not given Schottler permission to use the vehicle.
He faces charges of fleeing a police officer, obstruction of justice and fifth degree assault as well as unauthorized use of a vehicle, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving a vehicle without insurance.
Intoxicated juvenile
A 15-year-old boy remains hospitalized in serious condition at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, after becoming unconscious from drinking large amounts of alcohol at a northwest Austin residence.
The juvenile was left at his family’s residence at 1704 Eighth St. NE Friday afternoon. No adults were home at the time; only younger siblings and cousins.
When Austin Police Department officers arrived, a Gold Cross Ambulance Service crew was attempting to revive the youth found lying on the living-room floor of the residence.
When the youth failed to respond, he was taken to Austin Medical Center-Mayo Health System by a Gold Cross crew and later transferred to the Rochester hospital.
Austin police learned a party was held at 1107 11th St. NW, where the teen-ager was in attendance.
They learned the youth was given $15 to purchase alcohol for the party and returned with a bottle of vodka. He admitted to others at the party that he had smoked marijuana before attending the northwest Austin event and was seen drinking two-thirds of the bottle "like water," according to eyewitnesses.
The party at 11th Street NW was held without the presence of any adult supervision, according to police reports.
Police have turned over their investigation’s report to the Mower County Attorney for review and possible charges.
