Legion sweeps Blooming Prairie

Austin American Legion pitcher Abbey Bergstrom threw five shutout innings against her high school classmates Thursday night at Todd Park.
Bergstrom’s work against Blooming Prairie capped off a doubleheader sweep for Austin. They won game won 12-4 and game two 13-0, both in five innings.
Austin now has swept three straight doubleheaders three straight days by lopsided scores. They are 8-0 in the Southern Minny Conference
Bergstrom struck out four, but Blooming Prairie got some nice whacks at the ball. Amanda Busho smacked a double against her.
"She’s our high school pitcher so we know her well," Blooming Prairie coach Chad Gimbel said.
"I really looked forward to pitching against Maggie Romeo," Bergstrom said. "I wanted to get her out."
She did once with a pop up to first but Romeo got the best of Bergstrom in the second encounter with a solid single.
Austin put together a seven-run third to put game two away. Betsy Matheis hit an RBI double in the inning. In a four-run third it was Rhianna Jacobs getting the big hit, a two-run double.
In game one Amber Wilson was on the mound for Austin. She pitched four no-hit innings before giving up four hits in the fifth. She struck out six in the game.
Matheis hit a three-run double in this game. Kari Leif scored four runs and hit a double and Melanie Gabrielson scored three runs and hit two singles.
The Legion next takes the field on Thursday, July 6 when they play Kenyon-Wanamingo in a doubleheader at Todd Park. Then that weekend is the league tournament in Adams. State tournament berths will be determined by the outcome of this tournament with two teams going to the Class A tourney, five teams to the Class B, and three to the Class C.
