Lyle/Pacelli softball awards were handed out Sunday night at a year-end banquet. Standout pitcher Melissa Ehret was voted as the most valuable player.
The Lyle/Pacelli team had a banner year in the first year as a co-op team with Ehret and Amy Bickler doing the work on the mound. They wound up as co-champs of the Southeast Conference with the Houston Hurricanes. The teams posted 12-2 records and split in their two games with each other during the regular season.
Overall, L/P finished the year with a 20-5 mark and finished as the runner-up in Section 1A. L/P’s season was ended by the Hurricanes. Again the two teams split two games in post-season play, L/P going through the loser’s bracket of the Section 1A tourney. They, then needed to beat Houston twice to get to the state tournament for the second straight year. L/P got halfway home with a 1-0 win. But Houston then won their first ever trip to the state tournament with a 2-1 win in 17 innings.
Ehret pitched all 17 innings of the game after pitching L/P to two victories the day before. Ehret’s statistics for the year were: 15-5 record with a 1.30 ERA, 151 innings pitched, 104 hits, 120 strikeouts, 31 walks and 28 earned runs.
Ehret was named to the All-Conference team along with Bickler (.344 batting average, 32 runs, and three triples) for her play at shortstop, and Tammy May (.288, 17 runs and 17 RBI) at first base. Buffy Judd (.281, 25 hits, 24 RBI, 19 runs and two doubles) was honorable mention. Ehret, Bickler, Judd and third baseman Erin Evans (.333, .571 slugging percentage, 25 RBI, five doubles, two triples and a home run) all earned All-Section 1A honors.
Carrie Drees was named to the All-State Academic.
Other awards given out Sunday were:
– Outstanding Defensive award to Judd.
– Outstanding Offensive Player Award to Evans.
– Golden Glove to Bickler.
– Most Improved Player to leftfielder Jessie Schnieder.
– Shamrock Award to out fielder Drees.
