AHS grads help lead

St. Thomas to finish in College World Series

Austin High graduates Bryan Toov and John Frein capped of their stellar baseball careers at St. Thomas University with a second straight second-place finish in the Division III Baseball College World Series. During their stay at St. Thomas, they traveled to Cuba for an exhibition game and played the Cubans in a return engagement at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

The Tommies (36-14) on the season won their first eight tournament games before dropping two on a single day to Montclair State of New Jersey.

Starting pitcher Bryan Toov’s career stats were a 17-7 record with a 2.47 ERA and two saves. He struck out 100 and walked just 22 in 164 innings of pitching. He had the lowest walk-to-innings ratio in St. Thomas history. He was named to the MIAC All-Academic team two consecutive times. This past year he had 40 strikeouts and 11 walks in 80 and 1/3 innings pitched and an 8-5 record with a 2.91 ERA in 14 starts. He was 4-1 in postseason appearances.

Toov was named the All-MIAC team and MIAC All-tourney team. He was voted to the GTE-CoSida Academic All-District team and was on the national ballot for Academic All-American with a 3.46 GPA in biology.

Starting shortstop John Frein had a career .333 batting average at St. Thomas. He scored 64 runs, cracked out 79 hits, had 47 RBI, 33 walks and 15 doubles in 119 games played. This past season he played in 36 games and batted .319 with 21 runs, 23 hits, 12 RBI and five doubles. In 14 MIAC games, he batted .452 with 12 runs and eight RBI.

State Fair Milk Run set

Applications are being accepted now for the 16th annual Minnesota State Fair Milk Run, scheduled for Aug. 27. A total of 1,500 runners can sign up to compete in the annual 8-kilometer event.

The race begins at 7:45 a.m. at the State Fair Speedway and winds through St. Anthony Park and the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul Campus before finishing back at the race track.

Awards will be presented to the top three men and women finishers in 12 age categories: ages 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 and older. In addition, champion awards will be presented to the top five men and top five women overall.

Each participant will receive a Milk Run collector T-shirt, admission to the fair, a malt coupon from the American Dairy Association and an opportunity to win door prizes. The run is sponsored by the Minnesota State Fair, the American Dairy Association and WCCO.
