A crash between a semi and a snow plow Tuesday east of Dexter was one of nine incidents statewide of vehicles and plows colliding since Monday, with four of those coming in southeastern Minnesota.

The crash near Dexter occurred at around 3:20 p.m. on Interstate Highway 90 when the semi rear-ended the plow, Minnesota Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jessica Wiens said.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged, with the semi requiring a tow. However, no one was believed to be seriously injured, Wiens said.

The incident did shut down an eastbound lane of traffic for about two hours.

Wiens said it is important that motorists stay at least five car lengths behind plows to stay safe. The spokeswoman said this is because plows travel much slower than normal traffic, often around 30 mph, and create large snow clouds that make visibility difficult.

Snow plows also turn or exit frequently and can often drive over centerlines for better plowing, according to MnDOT.
