Mayo sweeps Packers

The Packers showed some of their potential, but couldn’t take a game from Rochester Mayo in Packer Gym Thursday.
Austin showed hustle throughout the night, but fell short by scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-14.
“If they played like this against Farmington, we easily would’ve won,” Austin head coach Barry Brobeck said. “They were just so much more aggressive and we’re going to win or lose by our aggressiveness.”
Austin (0-3 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) led 20-17 in the second game, but Mayo (1-1 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) scored seven of the next eight points to take over. Mayo’s Rachel Doll, a 6-foot, made a key block kill to make it 24-21.
While Doll had a big size advantage on the Packers’ front line, Austin did a good job of containing her as she had just a handful of kills.
“The girls were saying that this is the first time they’ve ever played well against Mayo and that is something. They’re a good ball club,” Brobeck said. “We hit fine, we’ve just got to work on communication. You’re going to have an issue when you’re going against six-footers, but they did real well on blocking.”
Haley Underwood had eight kills for Austin but Jocelyn Sheehan had the highlight of the night when she made a tough dig on a huge hit by Mayo in the third game.
Austin stats: Haley Underwood, 8 kills, 1 ace, 4 digs; Marwa Omot, 4 kills, 3 digs; Babaye Oja, 3 digs; Taylor Lady, 2 blocks, 1 ace; Jenna Svoboda, 2 blocks, 7 set assists; Jocelyn Sheehan, 2 aces, 3 digs
