NORTHWOOD, Iowa — A Northwood man accused of hitting a 7-year-old girl who was walking to a school bus in rural Worth County was criminally charged Wednesday with vehicular homicide.
Aaron Dwayne Gunderson, 31, faces two charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. One of the charges alleges he was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was charged in Worth County District Court on Wednesday.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Kadyn Halverson, of rural Kensett, was walking to a school bus on May 10 on Worth County Road S52 when Gunderson was traveling southbound in a red Chevrolet Silverado.
Gunderson allegedly failed to stop for the flashing lights and extended stop sign of the school bus, and struck the girl before continuing southbound without stopping at the scene of the crash.
Halverson died at the scene.
The Iowa Attorney General’s Office is pursuing the charges.
Gunderson is being held at the Worth County jail on an $85,000 cash-only bond.
