It’s official – there will be four new school board members come January 2000.
Shortly after noon on Thursday, the Austin Board of Education certified the election results for both the four school board seats – top vote-getters were Larry Andersen, Kathy Green, Bev Nordby and Bruce Loveland – and the special excess levy referendum.
Bev Nordby was the only soon-to-be board member at the meeting.
"We’ve got a lot to learn," Nordby said of the four new board members. "I’m not going in there thinking I can change the world, but I am going in to do my best."
The 13 who didn’t win in Tuesday’s election have seven days to contest the election results. If the difference between the winning and next closest candidate is less than 1 percent, the district would have to pay for the cost of a recount. If it is greater than 1 percent, the candidate filing for the recount would have to pay the costs.
So far, no one has asked for a recount.
Once the time for contesting the election has passed, the clerk of the school board, Brian McAlister, will deliver certificates of election to the four new board members.
