Senior Center building garden and greenhouse
Published 6:00 pm Saturday, September 17, 2011
As many of you know or remember this year the Senior Center has started a garden.
This has been very exciting to see seeds we plant produce fruits and vegetables. We wouldn’t have been able to design and build our raised bed garden without the help of the SHIP grant (State Health Improvement Program) a big thank you to them.
This week we are starting to work on our greenhouse. Riverland’s Construction class is helping us with this project. They are getting the cement poured and the greenhouse put up. This is an exciting new addition to our garden. We hope to be able to use it all year around.
Now that the days are getting cooler and soon we will see the signs of fall we are hosting a seed saving class at the center. Learn how to preserve plants and save seeds from your garden including:
• How to care for live plants that you may want to bring indoors over winter.
• How to collect and properly store seeds from plants
• How to properly store “summer bulbs” that need to be dug up and stored indoors.
This class is Wednesday at 2 p.m. To sign up for this free class call 433-2370 ext. 0 or stop down to the senior center front desk.
