Riverland men in the hunt for state golf crown

The Riverland men’s golf team shot some fine scores at the Minnesota State, Mankato golf course Monday to set them up for a run at the Minnesota State Community College title and the Division III Region XIII title.

The Riverland men’s golf team shot some fine scores at the Minnesota State, Mankato golf course Monday to set them up for a run at the Minnesota State Community College title and the Division III Region XIII title. The men are in second place in the nine-team state competition and 12 shots out of first place in the 15-team Region tournament . The women are also competing but are in a distant second place.
The Minneapolis Community and Technical College men’s team leads the way in each of the intertwined competitions. Its top four scorers combined for 326 strokes. The Blue Devils top foursome were in with a 338. Bethany Lutheran was next in the state competition with a 340. Riverland was standing in fourth place in the Region. Two Wisconsin schools were tied for second at 331, Madison Area Technical College and Mid-State. Bismark was one stroke behind Riverland. The top team advances to the nationals
The individual leader was Nate Krueger of Bethany who shot a 75. The top 10 individuals not on the top team qualify. Riverland’s top scorer was Chad Wolfe with an 82. Mike Willford and Wade Kolander each shot 85s, Pat Jilek an 86, and Dustin McCabe a 93.
Bethany is the leader in the women’s competition almost by default because the Blue Devils are the only other team with a full complement of players. Bethany’s top trio shot a 314. The three women from Riverland shot a 395. Kelly Leif was the top Blue Devil scorer with a 109.
The teams play the final 18 holes of the tournament today.
