An eight-year-old Austin boy suffered a broken rib, but is recovering after being apparently run over by a Jeep Sunday afternoon.
According to Austin Police Chief Paul M. Philip, the incident remains under investigation with the investigator’s report being reviewed by Mower County Attorney Patrick A. Oman for possible charges.
A 25-year-old Austin woman was eastbound on 5th Avenue NW, when the boy darted from a private driveway in the 1200 block of 5th Avenue NW. Sunday at 1:23 p.m.
The driver told the investigator she felt or heard a "thump" on her vehicle and then saw from her vehicle’s rearview mirror a body lying in the middle of the roadway.
Police speculated because of the Jeep’s high clearance the boy was struck and fell to the roadway while the vehicle proceeded forward over his body. She stopped her vehicle and returned to the scene.
A Gold Cross Ambulance Service crew rushed him to Austin Medical Center, where he remains hospitalized today, suffering from the broken rib injury and other unidentified "pain," according to the police report.
In two other weekend mishaps, personal injuries were also reported.
Faron Neville, 36, Hayfield, suffered cuts on his hands and an elbow after falling from his motorcycle in an intersection collision near 3:23 p.m. Saturday.
According to a police report, Neville was eastbound on 10th Avenue SE, when he saw a car enter the intersection, but was unable to avoid striking it despite braking his motorcycle.
Wade Holmen, 31, Austin, said he did not see the motorcycle entering the uncontrolled intersection.
Neville was taken by a Gold Cross Ambulance Service crew to Austin Medical Center and treated and released. No charges have been filed in the personal injury accident.
Cynthia Drake, 43, Austin, was also taken to AMC for treatment of minor injuries suffered in another intersection collision at 4:35 p.m. Friday.
According to a police report, Drake was in the intersection of 10th Street SW and 8th Avenue when she saw another auto approaching at an apparent high rate of speed.
A car driven by Chheang Oeung, 17, Austin, struck Drake’s vehicle in the intersection. He was uninjured.
Oeung was charged with failure to yield, according to police, following the personal injury accident.
