The Austin High junior varsity volleyball team improved to 6-3 on the season Saturday after winning its fifth straight match.
After beating Winona last Thursday, Austin edged Champlin Park 15-12, 15-9, Northfield 15-4, 15-9, Zumbrota-Mazeppa 15-9, 13-15, 15-12 and Faribault 15-11, 15-12 in the championship game of the Red Wing Invitational.
"I’m pretty sure this was the first tournament we’ve won that I can remember," said Treasure Ransom, who is in her fourth year as Austin junior varsity coach.
Freshman Theresa Hirsch led Austin in the tournament.
"She’s been my most consistent player," Ransom said. "She’s a very controlled player, but tough. She doesn’t make too many errors. She really holds her ground around the net.
"Really all of my players were consistent," Ransom added.
Sophomore Suzanne Kooy, a B-squad regular, was called briefly in the tournament and served an ace for Austin’s final point in the championship against Faribault
Ransom was also pleased with the way her substitutes played against a Northfield, a lesser opponent.
