For the Mower County Historical Society, the fall harvest is here.
The MCHS will host its 2011 fall harvest celebration from 11 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the historical society in Austin on the east side of the fairgrounds. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Raffle tickets will be available for the Christmas in the County drawing for a handmade quilt. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
The fall celebration will include living history demonstrations such as oat threshing, logging and sawing. Though participants will be hard at work, guests can enjoy old-fashioned threshers’ dinners like farm wives made decades ago. Visitors can also get off their feet during wagon rides pulled by mules, or they can ride in a 1921 Model T.
There will be a bake sale with pies, pumpkin treats and the historical society will have some produce for sale from local growers. Attendees can learn how to make lefse with the help of the Sons of Norway. They will be demonstrating their technique and selling lefse as it’s made.
There will be plenty of fun for kids as well. Activities include candle making, pressing apple cider, learning about pioneer chores like washing clothes, lawn mowing the old-fashioned way and garden cultivating.
To top it off, there will be some big-band sounds from Big Ben and the Brian Concertina Band.
A new feature this year is an antique tractor, car, implement and gas engine show. Anyone interested in exhibiting may contact the MCHS. There is no charge to exhibit.
In case of inclement weather, the bake sale will operate from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 24 and all other activities along with the bake sale will take place on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Listen to KAUS radio for weather related information. For more information call 507-437-6082.
