On the job three hours and already Lana Isaacson’s desk is groaning from the weight of the paperwork. No shock there, Austin Utilities’ new director of customer services predicted that before she ever started.

"I’m very excited about getting the job," Isaacson said. "I’m sure I’ll be busy from the first day – there are many duties to start and many more to explore."

Monday morning found her moved in – sort of – and exploring the many programs and services the municipal utility offers with energy services representative Carmel Taylor.

Isaacson comes to Austin Utilities from Alliant Energy in Albert Lea, where she worked as a key account manager for the investor-owned utility. Continuing with Austin Utilities’ key accounts program will be part of her duties, along with overseeing other customer service areas.

"It’s going to be a pleasure working with Ms. Isaacson," interim general manager Jerry McCarthy said. "She brings a wealth of knowledge about the utility industry and key account programs to Austin Utilities. Her past experience with Alliant Energy and Interstate Power will bring a new perspective to our current programs and our program development."

Isaacson figures the exchange will be two-way.

"We both have a lot to learn from each other," she said. "I’m sure working for a municipal utility will be different, as well as exciting and challenging."

Originally from Mason City, Iowa, Isaacson lives in Albert Lea with husband Eric – who works with the Soil Conservation Service – and 3-year-old daughter Bria. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.

Isaacson’s arrival leaves Austin Utilities with two vacant positions remaining at the top level. The search for a general manager is expected to last approximately three months – the utility is using a search company – and McCarthy said there have been several applications for a director of Human Resources to replace Katie Larson, who took a position with the Hormel Foods Corp.
