Eugene M. Stearns of Prior Lake passed away on April 14, 2010, following a brave battle with cancer.
He was born on May 3, 1932 in Evanston, Ill., the son of Dr. Eugene M. and Mrs. Norma H. Stearns. He received his education in Evanston and at Ripon College and Denison University. After three years service in the U.S. Army, Gene returned to school and earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in biochemistry from Purdue University. He then spent 12 years on the staff of The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota, in Austin, followed by 15 years as Product Development Manager of Life Science at The Conklin Company in Shakopee, Minn.
He thoroughly enjoyed his professional associations and accomplishments during his career. In Austin and in Prior Lake, Gene took an active part in many functions in his churches, in The Boy Scouts of America, in his political party and in other community organizations.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Norma Jean Hoener; his first wife,
Margaret E. Stearns.
He is survived by his three sons: William C., Kenneth E., and John M. Stearns; his niece, Jennifer Lynn Hoener; his loving wife of 18 years, Patricia E. Stearns; and her two sons, Bentley R. and Royce B. Jackson.
Gene was particularly grateful to the medical staff of The Mayo Clinic for providing him with “extra” years and to many friends and clergy who helped to make these happy and meaningful ones.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 22 at 1:30 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Ave., Minneapolis, with a reception following the service. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Fri day, April 23.
