Marvin Brekke

Marvin Burnett Brekke, 86, of rural Austin, died at Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea Friday morning, Nov. 20, 2009. 

He was born April 1, 1923 to John P. and Thea Olivia (Stoa) Brekke in Moscow Township, Freeborn County, Minn. Marvin was raised by his sisters after his mother died of pneumonia when he was 2-years-old. Baptized and confirmed at Moscow Lutheran Church, Marvin attended Stoa country school and lived on the family farm most of his life. He married Mary June Arett in 1954 at Moscow Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born. Mary June died on June 24, 1972.  Marvin worked near Oakland for the Cotter family as a farmhand for many years. He was an excellent mechanic to whom others turned for help with machinery and auto repairs. A member of Moscow Lutheran Church, Marvin was devoted to his family and had a gift for making conversation.

Survivors include two sons, Mark (Debra) Brekke of rural Austin, Paul Brekke of rural Austin; two daughters, Annette (Kim) Naatz of rural Glenville, Joyce (Jerry) Erstad of rural Austin; 10 grandchildren, Christopher, Lindsay and Emily Brekke, Adam Brekke, Jessica Naatz, Jonathan and Matthew Brekke, Lee, Emma and Megan Erstad; five great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; sister, Palma Ulland of LaPorte; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary; son, David; his parents; four brothers, Johan “Erling,” Brekke, Adolph, John and Emil Nordby; sisters, Sylvia Gilbertson, Bertha Hanson and Ruth Arnetveit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at Moscow Lutheran Church, 25826 870th St., Austin with Pastor Robert Berthold officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.  Interment is at Hillcrest Cemetery near Oakland.
