The stage welcomes uncertainty and questions next week with Summerset Theatre’s latest production — “DOUBT, a parable.”

The award-winning drama opens Wednesday at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre on the Riverland Community College campus. The performance will have four runs, closing Saturday, July 10.

DOUBT is centered around Bronx school principal Sister Aloysius who takes matters into her own hands when she suspects young Father Flynn of having improper relations with a male student.

The 90-minute tale written by John Patrick Shanley — which is more about questions of moral certainty than scandal — was made into a film in 2008, starring Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius.

The production is directed by Riverland Community College’s director of communications, James Douglass, who directed the play for the Rochester Civic Theatre earlier this year.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever done this,” Douglass said, speaking of directing the same play,back-to-back, at two different theaters. “It’s been an interesting experience.”

Douglass also designed the set for the Rochester production, which will be re-used in Austin.

Douglass encourages those who have seen the movie not to shy away from seeing the play, too.

“As a play, it’s got an energy that’s a little different,” Douglass said. “It’s going to be a great show.”
