PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. — A barn fire near Pelican Rapids has killed about 9,000 turkeys that were due to go to market next week.
John Gorton operates the farm and made the emergency call Tuesday night. Firefighters from Pelican Rapids and Elizabeth arrived to find the barn engulfed in flames.
Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, but the building — and its 9,000 turkeys— were a total loss.
Losses are estimated at up to $750,000. Firefighters were on the scene for about four hours.
Arson is not believed to be a factor. Pelican Rapids Fire Chief Trevor Steeves says an electrical issue might be to blame.
The Otter Tail County sheriff’s office is investigating.
