Roy A. Kjarum, 84
Roy Alvin Kjarum, 84, of Austin, died on March 21, 2009 at Austin Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 5, 1924 in Hovland, Minn. to Selmer and Idella (Melos) Kjarum. Roy attended Cook County High School and graduated from high school in Grand Marais, Minn. He moved to Austin and served in the US Navy during World War II. Roy returned to Austin and was married to Lucille E. Yarwood on Dec. 18, 1948 at Austin. He attended lineman school at Jackson, Minn., and was employed by Austin Utilities for 37 years as a line foreman. For 55 years he has been a member of the IBEW. Roy was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Eagles Club, Austin Post #91 American Legion and the Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved spending time with his family, summers at the cabin and playing with the great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking, traveling and fishing.
Roy is survived by his wife, Lucille Esther Kjarum, Austin; daughters, Sue (Mike) Hangge, Arden Hills, Minn., Judi (Dan) McMullen, Conifer, Colo.; son, Jon (Megen) Kjarum, St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, Kristin, Aaron, Jae, Jenni and Jeff; great-grandchildren, Arissa, Ashlyn, Aubrey, Caden, Sam, Avery and Lilly; brothers, Kenny (Harriet) Kjarum, Pine City, Minn., Bill (Betty) Kjarum, Mankato, Minn.; sister, Jean (Harold) Kamppi, Moose Lake, Minn.; nieces and nephews.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Idella and Selmer Kjarum and a sister, June.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Reverend Ron Barnett Officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery with Austin Post #91 American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 Veterans of Foreign Wars in charge of military rites. Visitation will be held on Wednesday for one hour before the service. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Honorary Bearers will be Aaron Hangge, Jeffrey Swanson and Jae Hangge.
