LaVerne Kamp

LaVerne Wayne Kamp, age 67 of Austin, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
LaVerne was born Oct. 1, 1941 in Austin to Vernon and Mildred (Steile) Kamp. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Army, and served until 1963. On March 6, 1965, LaVerne married Geraldine Harrison at the Crane Community Chapel.
LaVerne worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for 12 years; Crenlo, in Rochester for 12 years; and then worked at Hormel until his retirement. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1216, Olaf B. Damm and Crane Community Chapel.
LaVerne was a handyman who enjoyed building and fixing things around the house. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards and watching old movies and TV shows like “Green Acres” and the “Beverly Hillbillies.” LaVerne especially enjoyed spending time with his wife and dog, Buffy.
LaVerne is survived by his wife: Geraldine (Jeri) Kamp, Austin; sisters: Joyce (Clifford) Carlson, St. Paul; Jean Thompson, Forest City, Iowa; Marjorie Distad, Albert Lea, Minn.; Patricia (Bernard) Schaefer, Austin; Rita (Arnold) Earl, Austin; Linda (Jerry) Meyer, Pepin, Wis.; Karen (John) Torvik, New Castle, Calif.; and Debra (Leonard) Wood, Owatonna, Minn.; brothers: Charles Kamp, Hooks, Texas; Douglas Kamp, Austin; Keith Kamp, Austin; Scott (Denise) Kamp, Austin, and Tom Kamp, Austin; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Mildred Kamp; sister, Joan Lester, and brothers, Ricky, Raymond, Roger and David.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009 at Crane Community Chapel with the Rev. Dale Christiansen officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and for one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.
