Police search leads to felony forgery charges

A man living in Austin faces three counts of felony forgery following a police search at his home on Friday.

Jorge Vargas-Zacarias, 37, is in Mower County custody on $20,000 bail, or $10,000 with conditions. He is scheduled for arraignment Aug. 5.

Vargas-Zacarias has also been ordered to cooperate with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which handles deportations.

According to a criminal complaint, Vargas-Zacarias’ 907 Second Ave. NW home was searched at around 7 a.m. on Friday.

Officers found the defendant, as well as a Mexican voter ID in his name. They also found a Hormel employee ID in the name “Alberto Perez,” and that card had the same photo as the Mexican document.

Vargas-Zacarias admitted that he used the “Perez” alias to work at Hormel.

Authorities also found a forged Missouri ID card and a forged Social Security card, both in the “Perez”
