Sheriff to collect drugs in rural areas

Mower County authorities are once again planning on taking the new prescription pill drop box program to the road.
Sheriff Terese Amazi will be going to several small Mower County towns in the next month to tell residents about the program — which is designed to give people an easy and safe way to dispose of unused medications — and to collect unwanted drugs on-site.
The drop box itself is located in the lobby of Austin’s Law Enforcement Center. Amazi said her office has collected a wide array of drugs to date, filling one 55-gallon drum and one-third of another.
When the sheriff’s office collects enough medications, the drugs will be shipped to Illinois, where they will be incinerated.
After making several rural stops so far, here are the additions to the sheriff’s travel schedule:
Wednesday at the Dexter City Hall. 6 to 8 p.m.
Aug. 16 at the Grand Meadow City Hall. 6 to 8 p.m.
Aug. 19 at the Elkton City Hall. 6 to 8 p.m.
Aug. 28 at the Waltham City Hall. 9 to 11 a.m.
Sept. 4 at the Racine City Hall. 9 to 11 a.m.
Amazi said at her office’s first stop, in LeRoy on June 15, roughly 15 pounds of drugs were collected. Overall, she said the program has exceeded expectations.
