The Packers closed their boys soccer regular season out in historic fashion in Owatonna Thursday.
Austin beat Owatonna (5-9-2 overall) by a score of 3-1 for the first time in at least six years and it clinched a second place finish in the Big Nine —which is the best finish the Packers have ever had in the conference.
Austin has a six-game winning streak as it prepares for the Section 1A tournament, which begins next Tuesday.
“It was a very strong team effort and everybody contributed to this win,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “This is a strong way to finish the season.”
Jake Hagen-Erickson gave Austin a 1-0 lead when he scored on an assist from Francisco Torres 10 minutes into the game. After the Huskies tied things up with a corner kick, Hagen-Erickson struck again at the end of the first half when he drew a penalty and knocked in the PK to make it 2-1 with five seconds left in the half.
Torres put Austin up 3-1 when he scored on an assist from Juan Valladares in the second half.
Austin (9-3-3 overall, 6-1-2 Big Nine) fired off 23 shots in the win and Collin Weisert had eight saves in net.
Rochester Mayo — which tied Austin 0-0 — will take home the Big Nine crown.
