Five children and two adults are resting and recovering following a car accident Friday night in rural Racine.

The incident occurred at the intersection of 720th Avenue and 320th Street at around 9:45 p.m., with both cars ending up on their sides and one landing in a ditch.

The vehicle that went into the ditch, a Chevrolet Suburban, was being driven by Matthew Blair Prigge, 41, of Stewartville, who suffered broken ribs and a lumbar fracture. He has since been released from a nearby hospital’s intensive care unit, according to a sheriff’s department report.

In the vehicle with Prigge were his five children, ages 8, 12, 4, 14 and 11. All five were taken by ambulance as a precaution, but have since been released from the hospital and are recovering at home.

A passenger in the other vehicle, 19-year-old Torri Suzane Broich of Grand Meadow, was trapped in the Chevrolet pickup when it rolled onto its side in the road. Broich was extricated from the truck and airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. She suffered rib and collarbone fractures, but is currently in stable condition, the report states.

Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi said the intersection where the accident occurred is uncontrolled and also obstructed by corn fields. She said the speed limit in the area is 55 mph, but the report does not indicate how fast the two vehicles were going.
