A Blooming Prairie man was charged Wednesday with felony burglary for allegedly trying to break into an Austin home a day earlier.
Garrett Allen Johnson, 19, also faces misdemeanor counts of tampering with a motor vehicle and underage liquor consumption. He is in custody and awaiting a court date.
According to a criminal complaint, police were called to a home in the 1200 block of 20th Street Northeast at around 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday. The owner, 65, told police that a man wearing a white shirt had tried to enter through his bedroom window.
The home owner said he awoke to a prying sound, then saw the suspect, which caused him to flee, the complaint states.
Police did spot barefooted footprints leading up to the window, as well as what appeared to be a hand smudge on the glass.
Officers also came across a neighbor’s truck, which had its door open and dome light on. The vehicle’s owner said someone had gone through the truck, and officers indicated that they believed the same person was responsible for both incidents.
Johnson, who was wearing a white T-shirt and running barefooted, was apprehended a few blocks away. Johnson appeared heavily intoxicated, and he registered a 0.208 blood-alcohol level, the complaint states.
He told officers that he was walking to his brother’s house, but he then changed his story and said he had been with a “friend,” who ran off when officers arrived.
Police were unable to locate anyone else in the area.
Johnson then said he had gotten a ride to Austin from Albert Lea, although he also seemed to think he was still in Albert Lea, the complaint states.
Johnson was arrested, and the complaint states that he acted belligerently while being taken to jail.
