A St. Paul man pleaded not guilty Monday to a first-degree drug charge stemming from an August traffic stop.
The public defender for Justin Tyler Truong, 26, requested a speedy jury trial for his client, who remains in the Freeborn County jail on unconditional bail of $100,000.
According to court documents, Truong allegedly possessed 2 ounces of methamphetamine in his truck during an August traffic stop on Interstate 35 near the border of Freeborn and Steele counties.
When Truong was pulled over, he was reportedly shaking and acting nervous about the stop, according to court documents. When he was told he would only be getting a warning for a lane-change violation, his nervousness did not subside, but instead reportedly got worse.
As this continued, the trooper began asking additional questions, which Truong was not able to answer, according to reports.
The trooper eventually searched the vehicle and found a green backpack in the truck with a digital scale. Inside a pair of socks he reportedly found baggies containing white powder, which appeared to be meth.
Truong had been in prison previously on a methamphetamine-related charge.
His jury trial has not been scheduled yet.
