Pool ordinance approved

An ordinance revision passed by City Council Monday night should help make pools throughout Austin safer.

The change to the law will require all pools — even those deemed to be portable — to have fences around them, provided they hold at least two feet of water. Previously, only permanent pools were covered by the city’s ordinance, leaving large, inflatable models technically uncovered by the law.

Council unanimously supported the measure, which also seemed to have ample community support.

“Yes, they should have a fence,” local pool owner Debbie Iverson said earlier this summer about large, portable pools.

Dan Schreiber, who owns Midnight Sun Pools n’ Spas stores in Mankato and Austin, said he too supports fencing off all types of larger, deeper pools.

“I think they should all have a fence,” Schreiber said in earlier interview. “Safety is a big issue.”
