The Southland wrestling team went 2-2 Saturday and earned a tie for second place at the five-team Southland Invitational dual meet in Adams.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” Southland wrestling coach WIliam Feuchtenberger said. “Two of our most experienced wrestlers are out with sickness and injury, so for this team to get two victories, I didn’t expect it. I didn’t expect it at all.”

Triton went 4-0 to win the tournament, while Southland; Lewiston-Altura-Rushford-Peterson; and St. Clair all finished 2-2. St. Ansgar, Iowa, went 0-4 on the day to finish fifth.

The Rebels won contests against LARP 42-38 and St. Ansgar 40-30.

Against LARP, Southland received some nice help at 215 pounds, where senior Derick Smith, wrestling for his first time ever, scored a pin.

Others scoring pins included Mike Churchill at 125; Cameron Landherr at 145; Christian Padilla at 152; and Ben Loecher at 160.

Landherr finished the invitational 3-1.

Feuchtenberger said there weren’t any standout performances in the St. Ansgar dual meet, just a overall team effort.
