Area residents can bring their old electronics to the Mower County Fairgrounds to be recycled for free this Saturday.
The city of Austin and Mower County are sponsoring the recycling event. Items that can be recycled for free include computers, monitors, printers, televisions, cell phones, stereo equipment and microwaves.
A fee of $25 will be charged for refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
Hazardous materials, liquids, fluorescent bulbs, smoke detectors and biohazards will not be acceptable.
The event will have optional data cleansing services available, as well. The cost is $10 per drive for Department of Defense approved hard drive cleansing.
The event was spurred by the success of RE-Fest, which was held at Riverland Community College in September. One of the most popular aspects of RE-Fest was the free appliance and electronic recycling, according to city officials. The company contracted to recycle the items for RE-Fest said many people were turned away because so many residents wanted to take part.
The recycling event will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mower County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Oct. 29.
